The LANTRA Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine) is a nationally recognised qualification that enables graduates to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). This qualification allows individuals to work in various equine veterinary settings across the UK, including referral hospitals, first-opinion practices, rehabilitation centres, and equine charities. It may also be recognised in other countries, depending on local regulations.
Course Structure and Duration
The course is a two-and-a-half-year programme awarded by LANTRA and regulated by the RCVS. The course combines theoretical learning with extensive practical training, ensuring students develop the necessary knowledge, technical skills, and clinical competencies in equine veterinary nursing.
The theoretical component is delivered through a blend of face-to-face and online study blocks:
- The training centre has six in-person study blocks per year (each lasting one week).
- Two online study blocks per year, providing structured virtual learning and support.
- Two weeks of intensive practical training at the end of the course, consolidating clinical skills before the final practical assessment (OSCEs).
In addition to the academic requirements, students must complete a minimum of 1,800 hours of practical training in an approved Training Practice (TP) under the supervision of a Clinical Supervisor. This workplace-based learning is essential for developing the hands-on skills required for equine nursing.
